Sony and Philips Launch Compact Disc in Japan

October 6, 1982 · Tokyo, October 1

TOKYO - In a significant advancement for the music industry, Sony and Philips have introduced the compact disc, a new format for digital audio storage, in Japan. The compact disc, or CD, is capable of holding high-quality digital audio recordings, offering unparalleled clarity and durability compared to traditional vinyl records.

On this historic day, Sony also unveiled the CDP-101, the first player designed specifically for compact discs. The player, which sells for around 73,000 yen, promises a new era of music enjoyment with its superior sound quality and ease of use. The CD’s smaller size, approximately 12 centimeters in diameter, makes it portable and more convenient than the larger LaserDisc that preceded it.

Industry experts predict that this new technology will rapidly gain acceptance among consumers, particularly as more audio titles are released on the new format. The compact disc is expected to revolutionize the way music is stored and played, potentially leading to a decline in the popularity of vinyl records and cassette tapes. With its robust construction and resistance to damage, the CD represents a significant leap forward in audio technology.
